This week, students brought The Little Red Hen to life through a hands-on farm experience. Emma the farmer from Spitalfields Farm brought two Little Red Hens into the classroom, giving children the opportunity to meet them up close and gently touch and pet the chickens.
Students learned how wheat grows on the farm and, just like in the story, helped thresh wheat by rubbing the seed heads between their hands before working together to winnow the grain by blowing away the light chaff. Finally, students took turns using a hand-cranked grinder to turn the wheat seeds into flour, discovering how everyday foods like bread and pancakes are made.
The activity encouraged teamwork, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of where our food comes from—just like the Little Red Hen hoped!
