Year 6 Normandy Trip: Learning from the Past, Climbing Toward the Future

This term, our Year 6 students travelled to Normandy for a four-day adventure that combined history, literature, and teamwork. The focus of the trip was the French Resistance during World War II, with students visiting sites like the Caen Memorial Museum and the D-Day landing beaches. These experiences opened powerful discussions about standing up against injustice, discrimination, and the importance of tolerance and friendship.

As part of the trip, students also read Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, a novel about a young girl helping her Jewish friend escape Nazi-occupied Denmark. Group reading and comprehension sessions brought the book’s themes to life, especially when paired with real-world locations and stories of resistance.

In between the history and reflection, students also had the chance to challenge themselves on a climbing wall—building trust, resilience, and teamwork in a different way.

From learning about courage in wartime to supporting each other on the climbing wall, this trip was a journey of growth, empathy, and unforgettable experiences.
