From Tuesday 12 to Friday 15 May 2026, CFBL’s CM2 pupils took part in a residential trip to Normandy, an experience designed to bring together historical understanding, literary study and shared community life.
This four-day programme gave pupils the opportunity to deepen their learning around the Second World War while discovering an important part of French and European history first-hand. Linked to their class reading of Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, the trip encouraged pupils to reflect on themes such as resistance, friendship, tolerance and discrimination through discussion, observation and personal response.
During their stay, pupils visited the Caen Memorial Museum, took part in a pedagogical workshop and explored key sites including Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery. These visits helped them connect classroom learning with the lived realities of history, while developing their curiosity, empathy and sense of perspective.
The programme also included time for reading, diary writing and creative activities, allowing pupils to process what they discovered in thoughtful and personal ways. Outdoor activities on the beach, shared meals and time spent living together also made this an important experience in independence, responsibility and group spirit.
The trip reflected CFBL’s commitment to meaningful learning beyond the classroom. Our CM2 pupils returned with new knowledge, greater confidence and lasting memories of a rich and memorable stay in Normandy.
