Educational trip to Iceland: an unforgettable journey through science and geography

From 20 to 24 April 2026, our students took part in an exceptional educational trip to Iceland, designed to bring their learning in science and geography to life. The visit offered them an enriching and memorable experience in one of the world’s most striking natural environments.

Throughout the trip, students explored first-hand many of the natural phenomena studied in class, including volcanic activity, geothermal energy, glaciers and tectonic plate boundaries. This immersive experience allowed them to observe spectacular landscapes up close while also developing their independence, confidence and team spirit.

From the moment they arrived, students discovered several iconic geological sites, including the Bridge Between the Continents and the Gunnuhver hot springs, which helped them better understand plate tectonics and Iceland’s geothermal activity.

The programme then continued with visits to major landmarks such as Thingvellir National Park, located on the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, the Geysir geothermal area, Gullfoss waterfall, and the Friðheimar greenhouse, an inspiring example of agriculture in an extreme environment. These visits brought classroom learning to life and sparked students’ scientific curiosity.

Students also explored recent volcanic landscapes, discovered Reykjavík, and visited the Lava Centre, an interactive exhibition dedicated to volcanoes, earthquakes and the formation of Iceland. The trip also took them to a number of remarkable natural sites, including Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls, the village of Vík, the black sand beach of Reynisfjara and Sólheimajökull glacier, where they were able to observe clear evidence of glacial retreat.

Supported throughout the trip by CFBL staff and a specialist field study tutor, students benefited from a rich educational experience from start to finish. Staying together for four nights in a guesthouse, they shared an adventure shaped by discovery, collaboration and curiosity.

This trip to Iceland was a wonderful opportunity to learn beyond the classroom, in direct contact with a truly fascinating landscape. Combining observation, exploration and wonder, it will no doubt remain one of the highlights of the school year.
