Year 9 International Option Pupils Visit The National Archives: Resistance and Rebellion in the Caribbean

As part of their History studies, our Year 9 International Option pupils visited The National Archives to conclude their unit on the transatlantic slave trade.

Following an introduction to the Archives and their role in preserving historical heritage, pupils took part in a two-hour workshop entitled “Resistance and Rebellion in the Caribbean”.

During the visit, they had the unique opportunity to examine and handle original historical documents, including newspapers, letters, punishment records and maps.

Through analysing these sources, pupils explored the different ways enslaved people resisted slavery, from everyday acts of resistance to organised armed revolts. They also deepened their understanding of the brutality of British colonial rule in the Caribbean and the restrictions imposed on enslaved people's cultural and religious practices.

A valuable and enriching educational experience, which allowed pupils to explore this period of history through original historical sources, while developing their critical thinking and historical analysis skills.
