A Special Visitor at School: Learning About Therapy Dogs

Today, the school welcomed a very special visitor — a therapy dog named Cooper, who is also one of our school’s family dogs. Accompanied by his owner, Lina, the visit offered pupils a valuable opportunity to learn about the role and purpose of therapy dogs.

Lina, who is a psychologist, explained that she sometimes works with Cooper in her professional practice. Together, they help children and adults better understand and manage their emotions. During the session, Lina spoke to the students about the importance of talking to trusted people when experiencing strong emotions such as sadness, anger, or worries. She also explained how interacting with a therapy dog, including gentle cuddling, can be very helpful in moments of emotional distress.

The children learned what happens in the body when we spend calm, positive moments with a therapy dog. Lina explained how breathing and heart rate can slow down, how the body releases “happy hormones,” and how this creates a sense of calm and wellbeing. She also described how Cooper is specially trained to remain calm, attentive, and reassuring in these situations.

The session included fun facts about therapy dogs, as well as an opportunity for students to cuddle Cooper if they wished, always in a respectful and supervised way. A strong emphasis was placed on safety and respect, with students reminded of the importance of always asking a dog’s owner for permission before petting any dog.

Today, Cooper visited the CE1 classes, where he was warmly welcomed by the pupils. The visits will continue, with sessions planned in the MS classes on Monday, followed by visits to the CE2 classes next Wednesday. This gradual approach allows each group of students to benefit from the experience in a calm and structured environment.

This special visit was greatly appreciated by both students and staff. We would like to thank Lina and Cooper for sharing this meaningful and educational experience with the school community. Initiatives like this help to promote emotional awareness, empathy, and wellbeing, while enriching everyday school life.
